What to know before you go
A waterfall is a good thing to point a hike at. You get a clear objective, and unlike a summit view it changes completely with the season. Near Sarajevo there are options at both ends of the scale: a half day out of the city, or a full trip deeper into the mountains.
Skakavac is the obvious first pick from Sarajevo. Access is straightforward, the forest approach is pleasant in most conditions, and the falls are big enough that guests who do not think of themselves as hikers still come away feeling the walk earned something. There is no technical ground anywhere on it.
Istup is a different day entirely. The setting is more remote, the landscape opens out, and there is more of a sense of going to look for something. It is the one to pick when you have already walked the routes closest to Sarajevo, or when the obvious choice does not appeal.
Use this guide for planning, then check current weather, route conditions, access, and tour details before choosing a date.
Spring and early summer are usually the best window, when there is more water coming through and the forest is at its greenest. Later in the summer these are still good hikes, but how impressive the waterfall looks depends on what rain has fallen recently. Current conditions tell you more than a photo taken in a different month.
The two suit different people. Families, and anyone who has not hiked in a while, do better on a short forest approach like Skakavac. Guests who want a longer mountain day, or who have already covered the trails nearest the city, tend to prefer Istup or a custom route to something less visited.
On waterfall routes the ground matters more than the distance. Mud, wet roots and slick limestone are what actually slow you down, and a hike that reads as easy on paper can take much longer when everything is wet. It is worth knowing what rain has fallen before you choose your shoes.
The advantage of going with a guide here is that the plan can move. If the trail is too wet, too busy, or the falls are not running well, we can change trailhead or reverse the route and still get a good day out of it, instead of driving to one spot and hoping.
For a mixed group with a wide spread of fitness, waterfall hikes are the easiest thing to get right. Everyone can manage them, everyone gets the same payoff at the end, and they show you a greener, quieter part of the country than the ridges do.
