What to know before you go
Sarajevo is unusual among European capitals in that you can be walking on a mountain trail within half an hour of leaving your accommodation. Forest, the Olympic ridges, waterfalls and highland villages all sit inside day-trip range, which makes choosing harder than getting there.
Trebević is where we send most first-time visitors. It is the closest, the length is flexible, and you get forest walking, what is left of the 1984 Olympics, and a long view back down over the city. If your time in Sarajevo is short, it asks the least of your logistics.
Skakavac is the one to pick if you want green and a clear objective at the end of it. The trail is easy going, the forest closes in quickly enough that the city disappears, and there is a waterfall to arrive at rather than just a viewpoint. Spring and early summer are when it is at its best.

Lukomir asks more of you, and it is usually the one people remember. You get open terrain, canyon views and one of the most distinctive traditional villages in the country. It takes considerably more of your day than Trebević or Skakavac. Almost everyone decides afterwards that it was worth it.
Igman and Bjelašnica suit anyone who wants the Olympic mountains and open ground underfoot. Depending on which route you take they stay gentle or turn genuinely demanding. Come here if you want horizon rather than trees.
Which one is right has very little to do with which name you arrived having heard of. Short transfer and a flexible finish, take Trebević. Forest and a waterfall, take Skakavac. A full day with a village and big scenery, take Lukomir or go higher.
Season shifts all of it. Spring is for green hillsides and waterfalls, summer wants an early start on anything exposed, and autumn gives you cool air and the clearest long views of the year. Even on an easy trail the weather decides what kind of day it turns into, so pick the route against the conditions rather than the other way round.
The best hike near Sarajevo is the one that matches your fitness, the hours you have, and the weather on the morning you go. That sounds obvious, but it is most of the difference between a day that feels rushed and one that feels well judged.
