What to know before you go
The best thing about hiking out of Sarajevo is how little of the day you lose getting there. Very few European capitals put you on real mountain terrain this fast. From the old town you can be on a forest trail, a ridge, or a path towards a waterfall in under half an hour.
That suits people on short itineraries, anyone with a free morning, and families who would rather not spend two hours in a car first. You do not need an expedition plan here. Half a day gets you air, a view, and a proper sense of where you are.
Trebević is the fastest answer. Take the cable car up from the city and start walking almost immediately, or drive to one of the trailheads and spend the time you saved on a longer loop. Forest, viewpoints, what the Olympics left behind, and enough route options to fit whatever length of day you have.

Skakavac is the other short-transfer option. The drive to the trailhead is quick, the path is easy to follow, and the waterfall at the end feels far more remote than the distance from town suggests. Spring and early summer are when the forest is greenest and the water is at its strongest.
For gentler ground there are meadow and forest routes around the rim of the Sarajevo basin. They work for families, for mixed groups, and for anyone who turned up without much gear. They are also what we fall back on when the higher routes are windy or wet.
What a guide changes here is mostly logistics. We pick the trailhead against the weather, the pace against the group, and the route against what you actually want out of the day. Less time spent solving parking and trail conditions, more time walking.
The short transfer is an underrated reason to base yourself here. Finish breakfast in the city, do a proper hike, stop somewhere for lunch, and still be back before late afternoon. For a lot of guests that convenience is what turns a vague plan to get outdoors into the part of the trip they talk about afterwards.
If you are choosing between several options, take the one that fits the time you have rather than the one with the most familiar name. There is enough access and enough variety around this city that a shorter route timed well beats a bigger one squeezed into the wrong half of the day.
